Choosing the Good Part

"Now as they were traveling along, He [Jesus] entered a village; and a woman named Martha welcomed Him into her home. She had a sister called Mary, who was seated at the Lord's feet, listening to His word. But Martha was distracted with all her preparations; and she came up to Him and said, 'Lord, do You not care that my sister has left me to do all the serving alone? Then tell her to help me.' But the Lord answered and said to her, 'Martha, Martha, you are worried and bothered about so many things; but only one thing is necessary, for Mary has chosen the good part, which shall not be taken away from her.'" (Luke 10:38-42)

In every stage and situation in life you will be faced with one primary decision: are you Martha or Mary? There will always be things that seek to fill your mind with worry and anxiety, but there will always be the option of choosing something better. Whether it is overwhelming school schedules and homework, or long hours and complications at work, or family troubles, or just general business, something is going to be consistently gnawing at the edge of your mind, tempting you to become preoccupied with things that simply are not as good as spending time at the feet of Jesus, listening to His Word.

Now, most of you probably do not prefer homework over spending time with God, so this may seem fairly obvious. You know quite well that you'd rather be reading the Bible or praying. (Although you'd probabaly rather be doing anything other than your homework, but that is beside the point.) However, does your life reflect this truth that spending time with God really is the best thing you could possibly do with your time? You may know that you'd rather study God's Word than worry about your insane schedule for the week, but are you doing it? Are you putting your devotions first? Because it's more than just the best thing; it's the most important thing you can do with your time.

Do not take away from your time with God. Without it, you will be unable to handle the busy schedule anyway. There is a time for diligently managing your schedule with your numerous responsibilities and workloads, but if you do not put God first, chaos will ensue. Without it, you will be unable to function effectively as a light to unbelievers. You will be unable to discipline yourself in the pursuit of godliness. You will ultimately reposition yourself away from the hand of God working in your life and continuing the process of sanctifcation every single day. Nobody but you has the ability to hinder your consistent meeting with the sovereign Creator of the universe. Choose the good part, and let everything else fall into place.
